Overview
Aphthous ulcers appear as painful white or yellow sores surrounded by reddish margins on the inner lining in the mouth. The ulcers vary in size and they heal without scarring.
What is the cause?
The exact cause of aphthous ulcers is unknown. It may be due to :
- Stress
- Hormonal changes
- Infection
- Diet deficiency
- Allergies
- Radiation
- Chemotherapy
What problems do aphthous ulcers cause?
Aphthous ulcers are associated with :
- Burning sensation
- Pain
- General discomfort
- Loss of appetite
- Fever
How long do aphthous ulcers last?
The pain usually decreases in 3 to 4 days but the ulcers usually take up to 10-14 days to heal.
Is any caution necessary when you have aphthous ulcers?
Have a dental check-up if the aphthous ulcers persist for more than two weeks, to rule out cancerous and pre-cancerous lesions.
Is there anything that can be done to relieve the pain or discomfort?
Yes, you can :
- Use antiseptic mouthrinses
