Understanding adolescent

Am I an adolescent?

Yes, you are if:

  • Your age falls between 10 to 19 years

Adolescence is a "period of transition" from childhood to adulthood.


Why does my body change?

Hormones are responsible for changes during adolescence.


What are the physical changes?

Growth spurt

Your body is growing, and it's happening very fast.

  • Starts at age 12-13 years
  • Peaks at 14 years
  • Stops at 18 years
  • Height velocity average 10.5 cm per year
  • Average height gain of 28 cm
  • Influenced by the male hormone androgen

  • Starts at age 10-11 years
  • Peaks at 12 or 13 years
  • Stops at 17 or 18 years
  • Height velocity average 9 cm per year
  • Average height gain of 25 cm
  • Influenced by the female hormone estrogen

Body taking shape

  • Muscular, broad shoulders
  • Increased strength and stamina

  • Breasts, hips and buttocks grow larger and become more curved

Hair growing everywhere

  • In the underarms
  • Pubic area
  • Moustache and beard

Miscellaneous

  • Skin becomes oily and rough
  • Acne or pimples may appear
