What are aphthous ulcers?

Aphthous ulcers are recurrent ulcers which may occur singly or in groups of three to five on the inner lining of the mouth. Mouth ulcers heal without scarring.

What causes aphthous ulcers?

Causes are varied and include :

  • Nutritional deficiency especially iron, folic acid and vitamin B 12
  • Reduced body resistance
  • Bacteria
  • Hereditary
  • Unknown

What are the features of aphthous ulcers?

The main features are soreness and pain which may last for 7-14 days.

Word of caution

There may be other underlying problems if the ulcers do not heal within 2 weeks. Consult your dentist if the ulcers persist for more than 2 weeks.

What are the complications?

Ulcers may worsen due to secondary infection. The child may have difficulty in feeding or eating.

How are aphthous ulcers managed?

Prevention and treatment modalities include :

  • Good oral health practice :
    • oral hygiene care
    • healthy eating
    • regular dental check-up
  • Avoid giving citrus juices and spicy foods.
  • Apply topical pain relief cream or gel.
  • See a dentist or paediatrician for consultation.
