Mosquitoes abuzz at abandoned site
By Rizalman Hammim

Residents living near an abandoned shophouse project in Jalan Utama in Masai have urged the authorities to monitor the project which has turned into a mosquito breeding ground.
The project, which was abandoned for the last five years, is located next to the Rumah Kedai Mara in Kampung Sungai Rinting.

A resident, Sabri Abdul Rahman, 38, said accumulation of rain water had led to the formation of a pond at the project site and residents were worried it would soon be infested with mosquitoes.

"The Johor Baru Central Municipal Council (MPJBT) needs to act fast to identify the owner of the project and order them to clear the pond and its surrounding area so that it will not be a health hazard and an eyesore.

"The area is the main thorough fare for people going to Masai as it is located next to the main road.

"We are worried that children might fall into the pond while playing there," said Sabri.

He also hoped that the Health Department would carry out fogging in the area to prevent the breeding of mosquitoes.

MPJBT councillor for Masai, Chia Chor Hui, said the council's representatives would visit the area soon to get a better picture of the residents' complaints and clear the pond.
