Mom, I Can’t See!

Introduction

Do not take things for granted when our children complain “Mom, I can’t see the writing on the blackboard“. Parents must take appropriate action in the event of a situation like this. Many parents are surprised when told that their children have blurred vision and need to wear glasses. “How does this happen as my wife and I have never wear glasses?” There are also parents who delay wearing of glasses with the excuse, “My child is still young, he can wait to wear glasses.” Some parents think that if a child starts wearing glasses at early age, the glasses power will increase rapidly. Such assumptions are not true because it can worsen your child’s vision. If your children have blurred vision and need to wear glasses, you must act quickly to prevent the occurrence of  ‘lazy eye‘. ‘Lazy eye’ means vision that cannot be improved despite wearing appropriate glasses. ‘Lazy eye’ can occur in one or both eyes. If vision therapy is given immediately before the child reaches the age of 7 years, a ‘lazy eye’ may be restored. If left without wearing appropriate glasses or vision therapy, the eye will continue to dysfunction.

Causes Of Blurred Vision In Children :

  • Refractive error (farsightedness, nearsightedness and astigmatism).
  • Strabismus
  • Congenital Cataract
  • Droopy eyelids (ptosis)
  • Eye Diseases.

Drooping or falling of the right uppereyelid                                            Squint in right eye

Parents need to be aware of and monitor the behavior of their children who show signs and symptoms of blur vision such as:

  • Reading a book at a very close distance.
  • Difficulty to read writings on the blackboard.
  • Difficulty to read in a long period.
  • Frequent eye rubbing.
  • Frequent blinking and squinting to focus.
  • Frequent dizziness and headache.
  • Sensitivity to bright light.
  • Prefer to see with one eye.

If the above symptoms occur bring your child for treatment. Get an eye check up and advice from optometrists immediately. A comprehensive eye examination will be done and optometrists can confirm the condition of your child’s. If your child needs to wear glasses, immediately wear it to prevent lazy eye from occurs. Parents and other family members must provide support and encouragement so that children like to wear their glasses. Try not to tease child who wear glasses. Parents need to see teacher to explain and discuss about their child’s vision problems.

Children Need To Be Aware Of The Importance Of eye

Children who appear normal also have to undergo an eye examination. Eye examination for the first time should be done as early as four years or when they enter kindergarten. At these ages they are not able to distinguish normal vision with abnormal. They are unable to tell their parents if their vision is blurred. Therefore eye examination should be performed to assess the health of their eyes. Any problems that require glasses, contact lenses or vision therapy, can be given immediately and corrected before going to school.
