'Close watch on health supplement ingredients'

THE Health Ministry through it's pharmaceutical division constantly monitors and inspects the ingredients used in health supplements and cosmetic products in the market to make sure they are safe.

"Among the activities are sampling and product testing," Deputy Health Minister Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin said to a question by Senator Dayang Madinah Tun Abang Openg.

She said 2,897 samples were taken from various companies last year, compared with 2,531 samples in 2009.

"These included products manufactured for direct-selling."

The ministry also checked the labels and product information to ensure that they complied with labelling requirements.

Later, replying to a question by Senator Muhamad Yusof Husin, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom said to date, 141 pharmaceutical companies had received the halal certification for their products.
